Data Mining
Traditional data analysis is done by inserting data into standards or
customized models. It is assumed that the relationships among the variables in
the model are well known, however in many situations this is not the case. In
such situations data mining maybe approached.
Data mining, also known as knowledge discovery, "Draws on techniques and
theories from a multitude of fields, including statistics, pattern recognition,
learning, databases, OLAP, optimisation, uncertainty modelling, visualization,
and high-performance and parallel computing." (Data Mining and Knowledge
Discovery, An International Journal).
